One Year of Weekly Writing - Digital Explorers' Diary #52

Digital Explorers' Diary #52

Welcome to the Digital Explorers' Diary #52!

A curated collection of thought-provoking topics about interactive technologies, AI, web3, sense-making, entrepreneurship, and psychology.

Here it is, the 1-year anniversary edition of the Digital Explorers’ Diary! I want to thank you all for following, and looking forward to the coming year!

I’ve learned a lot while writing a newsletter every week. Mainly, that starting is the most important, and then consistency is critical. Time flies, and in just a year, I’ve written 53 newsletters, reviewed hundreds of news, and written dozens of thought-provoking pieces. The other lesson: time-blocking a writing session on my calendar.

It was a fantastic year for innovation, with the rise of generative AI and the rationalization of the Metaverse industry.

Let’s dive into a selection of my favorite articles – scroll down to your area of interest, and let me know in the comments if you’d like me to cover a specific topic!

Generative AI

Thanks to AI agents, all our daily applications will be transformed.

The Division of Opinions about AI: imagine a world where collective intelligence is prevalent and where healthy, nuanced debates exist. Is it naive?

Imagine if, in a few years, it becomes relatively easy and cheap to train a GPT-4-like model and remove all securities; what do you think ill-intentioned groups will do?

An exploration of our love/hate relationship towards AI. We love what AI can do for us, but we hate what AI will do to us.

Regulations on AI are coming – you should prepare:

AI, smart or stupid? It depends on what you mean by “Intelligence“:

From the Podcast

I’m teaming up with Guillaume Brincin and Sébastien Spas on the Lost In Immersion podcast every week. This week:

  1. Last week at Siggraph 2023, a few people were able to test the latest Meta headset prototype, named Butterscotch. It addresses three main issues with the current headsets:
The low field of view. This prototype archives near-retina resolution with 56 pixels per degree - the human vision is 60 pixels per degree.
The eye focus. With a variable focal that tracks where the user is looking, the device can display high-definition objects at any distance.
The lens distortion. Usually corrected from the center only, Meta created a technique that unwraps the image from your actual eye position.
  2. Moment Factory is very well known for its high-quality interactive exhibitions, and they have taken it to the next level with a set of «Participation-based Interactive Experiences» where all users can participate in a collective art installation. Beautiful! We especially like the fact that other spectators can interact with the experience from their smartphones. That makes for a really immersive time for everyone!
  3. We then discussed Meta’s Mixed Reality and Augmented Reality Strategy. As the Meta Quest 3 is near its release date, they disclosed that they would only produce 1,000 units of their AR Glasses next year.
Our take on this is simple: for us, it makes sense, but for the general public not familiar with technology and vocabulary, the message might be confusing. In contrast to Apple, that has a simple, clear, and non-technical message.
