NeRF and 3D Capture - Tech Insiders News, November 2022

A curated collection of «signal over noise» links about interactive technologies, AI, web3, sense-making, entrepreneurship, and psychology.
Today’s image generated by Midjourney, prompt: «A NeRF view of a futuristic mixed reality headset» (Inspired by the links below.) Full image at the bottom of the article.
- Niantic - the creators of Pokemon Go - and Qualcomm are increasing their collaboration on Augmented Reality.
It’s a great move: Niantic has tons of positioning data from millions of Pokemon Go users, providing the best data layer on the market; they need hardware to enable access to it!
It’s unclear in the article if they will actually build a device; it seems more like a proof-of-concept / shared vision of what it could become. - This week's «quick tech buzzword explainer» (Should I make it a thing?) is about… NeRF.
In short (and probably mostly scientifically wrong, but to get to the point), NeRF is a technique that reconstructs a 3D scene based only on images or videos and allows one to look at this scene from any point of view! (Any many other cool features, see the link above)
Why does it matter? I bet that it will impact a lot of visual industries:
You will be able to choose your point of view in a movie.
You will be able to scan any natural object or location (also think of the implications in architecture, maintenance, quality insurance, and risk assessment…),
It will be straightforward to create fake videos,
Ultra-realistic games,
And much, much more. - In other headset-related news, Lynx R-1 has been named CES 2023 Innovation Awards Honoree! I keep talking about this device because it’s one of the most promising our team at Gimbal Cube has been able to test this year, so it’s great to see it at CES!
By the way - will you be there? Part of our team will be!
And today’s image, thanks to Midjourney: «A NeRF view of a futuristic mixed reality headset». I like it! I think Midjourney took inspiration from another type of Nerf :-)
