Meta's Text-to-Video Generator - Tech Insiders News, October 2022

Tech Insiders News - October 4th, 2022

A curated collection of «signal over noise» links about interactive technologies, AI, web3, sense-making, entrepreneurship, and psychology.

Today’s image generated by Midjourney, prompt: «A Fencing Athlete wearing Vogue» (Inspired by the links below.) Full image at the bottom of the article!

  1. Driving the news: the activity in AI-generated content doesn’t stop, with Meta (ex-Facebook) showcasing a text-to-video generation tool. There is still a long way to go before it’s usable commercially, but given the unprecedented growth in AI over the past months, it will come fast.
The debate keywords: content and intellectual property ownerships, fake, creativity enabler, creativity facilitation, artist employment risks.
  2. Buzzworthy: Mark Zuckerberg released a video of him fencing in mixed reality with Olympic medalists.
It showcases the next Meta Headset, to be released probably during the Connect event on October 11th.
What we are wondering: To be usable by professionals, the latency between players must be very low! Hopefully a good sign of the headset's performance and not a fake promotion. Fun fact: fencing is lightning fast.
  3. Meta (again!) headsets can approximate a user’s position without sensors other than the headset itself and its controllers.
Why It Matters: Even if not perfect, it allows a reliable and easy rendering of the user's avatar, bringing a better presence of the avatar in the virtual world.
Before that, there was always the need for at least a camera and complex motion capture devices to achieve such a result!

  4. Vogue has released a Metaverse virtual world experience; you can try it here without needing a headset.
Worth Noting: It’s a bit technical: the rendering of this experience is not done on your device but in the cloud, and the result is then sent back as a video. Very interesting to see this technology being used more; as I said previously, it’s probably the future.

You made it so far, yay! Bonus for you: the full image generated by Midjourney with the prompt «A Fencing Athlete wearing Vogue».
