Tech Insiders News - October 7th, 2022

A curated collection of «signal over noise» links about interactive technologies, AI, web3, sense-making, entrepreneurship, and psychology.

Today’s image generated by Midjourney, prompt: «Bruce Willis wearing a Virtual Reality headset» (Inspired by the links below.) Full image at the bottom of the article.

  1. Driving The News: During the Tesla AI days, Elon Musk and his team revealed the Optimus, an all-purpose humanoid robot.
The Robot could help in many areas, for repetitive tasks and especially in factories where it will be tested by Tesla.
Elon Musk sees this robot as a massive help for humanity, where difficult/repetitive/boring jobs will not be needed anymore.
The paradox: Elon Musk knows the dangers of AI, but he builds a robot powered by AI. He addressed these concerns during the event, but who knows how AI will evolve?
  2. Bruce Willis, who ended his career due to aphasia, had supposedly given rights to an AI company to generate fake movies using his face.
Oh wait - It might not be true, Why It Matters: deepfake - AI-generated fake videos - are inevitable, and currently, there is no clear policy on it, so it’s interesting to see that this might set a precedent and that others might follow, even if false!
Midjourney-generated Bruce Willis below, and a surprise at the bottom of the article!
  3. The new Magic Leap mixed-reality headset is out!
The first version was all-purpose, while this one is dedicated to enterprises.
Where It Stands: the competition is high, with, amongst many others, Microsoft leading the way with the Microsoft Hololens usages for the military. Will Magic Leap manage to rise to the top?
  4. What we want to use: Niantic and 8th Wall are releasing Lightship VPS, a location technology for Augmented Reality experiences that enables centimeter-level accuracy in supported cities.
It will now be easier to build location-based augmented reality experiences for the web - with 8th Wall, no need for apps!
The potential is enormous for city-wide gaming and tourism! It’s an augmented reality metaverse digital twin of the city!
