XR Commandment #5 - Don't Forget Social Sharing

XR Commandment #5 - Don't Forget Social Sharing

5️⃣ Continuing the series of posts on the "10 XR Commandments," number 5 is one of the most overlooked, especially in Virtual Reality: the experience must live beyond the headset!

Social Sharing is an essential part of any experiential campaign. Even more in 2025 than before, the shareable assets should not be an afterthought; they must be a core part of the campaign. It's your distribution strategy and must be designed and incentivized from the start.

Remember: Instagram, TikTok, and others are where the buzz happens! Augmented Reality experiences are mostly smartphone-based, making it easy to take pictures or videos and share them directly. Snapchat is the perfect example of this, as AR is the core of the experience.

For Virtual and Mixed reality experiences, though, it's very rare to see embedded social sharing, for many reasons:

  • During events, XR Headsets are not your device.
  • VR experiences are… virtual, and we usually like to share a personalized asset, ideally with a selfie.
  • Social Network apps are not usually installed on XR devices.

Here are a few ideas to enhance the shareability of VR:

  • For LBE (Location Based Entertainment) experiences, take a group photo in person at the end and give the pictures to everyone through QR Codes.
  • Use Virtual Shots: if it's a game, record a short virtual video of a key moment. If it's a virtual visit, take a picture of the user's avatar in a hero location…
  • For individual experiences, such as a 360° virtual tour, have the users scan a QR Code once they are done, and offer a digital passport or digital souvenir with similar content or add-ons.
  • And finally, and that's valid for everything, incentivize sharing, with a small contest, loyalty points, lottery, etc.

And don't forget influencers! Even though it's not user social sharing per se, influencers can be a great medium to enhance your experience visibility. For a great example, see this video of Japanese influencer QuizKnock reviewing the Osaka Virtual Expo experience. This video is featured on the Expo main page and includes a special virtual room reproducing the influencer's studio! https://youtu.be/ckHjv2rJI1c?list=TLGGef3vBj2wnUsxMTA1MjAyNQ

Reversal: Sometimes, you don't need social sharing of the experience, as it is already based on a "Metaverse" like VRChat or Roblox. These are already social experiences that can be lived only through interaction with other players!

Are you currently designing an XR experience? If social sharing isn’t baked in from day one, we need to talk! 😉
