XR Commandment #9 - Context, Not Just Content

9️⃣ The sharpest visuals or best user experience can still flop if the real-world setting sabotages it. Screens that become unreadable under the sun, AR markers invisible in darkness, 5G that becomes 0.5G in a packed stadium or remote location… Context is the invisible co-designer of each activation.
Remember: the “where” often outweighs the “what.” Plan for it from day 1, and test in situ as soon as possible.
Four principles to integrate context and prevent issues:
- Map the location and the journey together. Go see the actual space (on-site location, typical living room, bus stop, boutique, factory…) with the device in hand. Note lighting, noise, connectivity, safety hazards, line queues… Design User Experience and User Interface around those constraints.
- Design for user posture vs session length. Quick checklist: Trade-show demos: 2-minute, mostly standing, one-hand interaction. Living-room VR: 15-minute seated cycles with comfort breaks. Street Marketing AR: thumb-only navigation, spotty 4G, short sessions, shareability.
- Plan for lighting & connectivity extremes: AR outside? Add fallback night-mode where marker detection is not mandatory. Loud venue? Subtitles are essential and audio is optional.
- Prototype on-site as early as possible. Even a draft Proof Of Concept is enough; it will reveal issues that no test in the office can reveal. a glare on a glossy screen, Bluetooth beacons or Wifi drowned by surrounding devices, QR codes hidden by crowds… Fixing those before content polish saves your time, stress, and bad user reviews.
Quick checklist
- Brand ambassadors or signage for on-site guidance.
- Mobile activations should be as light as possible to download.
- Offer both “sit” and “stand” positions - don’t forget accessibility!
- Use high-contrast UI that survives daylight.
- Embed safety prompts.
Reversal: There’s no reversal to this one. Even when simulating extreme conditions, such as training for surgery, military or emergency services, context still matters - it’s the core of the experience.
Building an XR activation? Let’s stress-test it in the exact place and time your audience will… before they do. 😉
